Our Story

Youth Craft began in 2003 at the New York Harbor School in Bushwick, Brooklyn as an after-school knitting club which counted amoung its 40 founding members young people from many different genders, racial and socio-economic backgrounds. Donations from philanthropic organizations such as Donor's Choose and many other generous patrons allowed the NYHS Knitting Club to continue to offer free supplies and arts instruction to 10-30 students on a weekly basis for the next two years. Our founder, Allison Newman, wrote about its success in the Wall Street Journal.
In 2004, Debbie Stoller featured the NYHS Knitting Club in Stitch and Bitch Nation. The NYHS Knitting Club will also appear in an upcoming documentary film being produced by two Columbia University graduate students studying the implications of the recent knitting phenomenon on cultural, gender and socio-economic issues.
Also in 2004, the NYHS Knitting Club transformed itself into Youth Craft, an organization with a larger scope of activities, more specific and focused goals, and wider influence. Youth Craft currently hosts after-school arts instruction in various genres of arts and crafts producton including:

  • Knitting
  • Crochet
  • Jewelry Making
  • Embrodiery

while offering our students a chance to express themselves, feel pride, be creative, or just kick back and relax.
